Frankly, the earlier TB design seemed to be a more robust setup all round.
I'm not in the habit of inspecting the settings(via visual inspection) of every vehicle I have had dealings with( I have sold over 2000 cars[prior to retiring] over the years, so its plentyyyyy{mostly 1996 vintage or later so mostly EFI controlled}), but from memory almost every single one that I have noticed generally has its TPS set approximately "in the middle". i.e. there is about the same potential amount of adjustment available either rotating clockwise or anti-clockwise.

Furthermore, most have not shown any disturbance to the white paint that I normally see applied, and so I have not noticed many that have varied from the "in the middle" position that I refer to.

I am not a linguist, so I am at a loss as to how to explain it any better.

Accordingly, it would be common sense to expect that the original "factory" settings of any TPS is about "in the middle", regardless of the vintage of the vehicle so equipped with a TPS module.

Experimenting, or "adjusting by feel", regardless of whether the car is "early"(3 wire like a TR/TS Magna or my R31 Skyline) or "late"(4 wire like my TL), does not really matter much.

Commence from(it probably is already "in the middle"), and make gradual small adjustments either side until improvements are felt.

Keep going in the direction that yielded improvements until a "peak"(i.e.best driveability) improvement is registered.

The behaviour of my R31 Skyline before and after "adjusting by feel" a number of times over a few days was really very noticeable, and for the better.

But it was 15 years old then and had been very sadly neglected by the previous owner(s), so I can't make valid comparisons to a later, better cared for, vehicle except to say that instead of considering dumping it as not worth the effort my "adjusting by feel" made it quite obvious that this car now had very little wrong with its RE4R01A electronic gearbox.

P.S. I have tried to find images on the www. of TPSensors set up in place on an engine to try to illustrate exactly what I mean.

Try as I might, I can't find any with suitable clarity.

Its too late tonight, but If I have time tomorrow I will take an image of my TL's TPS on which I am almost 100% certain is still in its original factory setting even after 15 years with the white paint intact, but I will confirm this tomorrow.
